Plot Overview

Imagine this: You’re living your best life in a foreign country, running a successful business, feeling untouchable. Then, overnight, war breaks out. The government collapses. The streets turn into war zones. And suddenly, you’re not a wealthy businessman anymore—you’re just another person trying to survive.

That’s exactly what happens to Ranjit Katyal (Akshay Kumar), a powerful and arrogant Indian businessman in Kuwait who suddenly finds himself in the middle of the 1990 Iraqi invasion. His comfortable life is shattered in an instant. At first, he tries to save just himself and his family. But as reality sinks in, he realizes that over 1.7 million Indians are stranded with no government to help them.

Now, I don’t know about you, but if I were in that situation, I’d be freaking out. But this guy? He steps up. He turns from a selfish businessman into the leader of one of the largest civilian evacuations in history. And watching that transformation is one of the most gripping parts of the movie.

Review

Performance and Direction

I’ll be honest—I’ve seen a ton of Akshay Kumar films, and some of them can be hit or miss. But Airlift? This is him at his absolute best. There’s no over-the-top action, no unnecessary drama—just pure, raw acting. He carries this movie on his shoulders, and you can feel every bit of the pressure his character is under.

One scene that really stuck with me is when Ranjit calls the Indian government, hoping for help, and realizes… no one is coming. That moment of sheer frustration and helplessness? Man, it hit hard. It reminded me of those times in life when you expect someone to step in and fix things, only to realize that if you don’t do it yourself, no one will.

Raja Krishna Menon’s direction is fantastic, too. The pacing is tight, the tension is real, and there’s no unnecessary fluff. He keeps things grounded, making the chaos of war feel disturbingly real.
