Plot / What’s It About?
Okay, Retro is a wild ride. It follows Paari (played by Suriya), a guy with a super intense past—think rowdyism, rebellion, and just… chaos. But now? He’s older, maybe a little wiser, and trying to find peace. The problem is, that old life doesn’t exactly want to let go.
Meanwhile, his wife Rukmini (Pooja Hegde) has taken a totally different path—she’s all about peace, calm, almost Buddha-like vibes. The two of them reconnect after years, and you can feel every ounce of history between them. It’s sweet, messy, and emotional.

But don’t get too comfy—the second half explodes into full-blown war mode. Like literally, there’s revolution, rebellion, shattering glass, and some lines you’ll want to quote just because they sound so cool.

So… what did I think?
Honestly? I really liked this one.
Karthik Subbaraj is one of those directors who never plays it safe. If you’ve seen Jigarthanda or Mahaan, you already know he loves mixing genres like a mad scientist. And Retro is no different—it’s got romance, dark comedy, political drama, and full-throttle action all wrapped in one stylish package.
Suriya is in top form here. He brings so much weight to Paari—you believe every word, every punch, every tear. There’s this one scene where he’s breaking down, and I actually paused the movie to take a breath (yeah, I’m that kind of movie-watcher). Pooja Hegde was a pleasant surprise too; she’s calm, graceful, and really holds her own.

The soundtrack by Santhosh Narayanan? Fire. That man never misses. “Love Detox” has been stuck in my head all week, and when he shows up on screen for “Kanimaa”? Chef’s kiss.
Visually, the film is stunning. One minute you’re in the lush green hills of Ooty, the next you’re smack in the middle of a fiery protest. It’s intense but beautiful—like scrolling through Instagram during a thunderstorm.
Now, real talk—it is long. 168 minutes. I had to split it into two sittings, snacks and all. Some parts in the middle dragged a bit, but the payoff in the final act? Totally worth it.

👍🏼 Recommended or Nah?
Totally Recommended.
If you’re into movies that mix heart, humor, and chaos with style, Retro is for you. It’s not just another love story or action flick—it’s both, and then some. You might cry a little, cheer a lot, and come out quoting random lines like “I struck, and it shattered!” (guilty). For more movie reviews and updates visit filmyfly!
